What You Always Wanted to Know About Maine Coons

Harry the Wonder Cat is a Maine Coon, so we thought we would give you a little background on the breed. Then you can see why Harry is so special.
The Maine Coon, otherwise known as the Gentle Giant, is a special breed of cat, or so Harry says (and we all know how smart he is).
Let’s start with the outer cat. Maine Coons are extremely big for a house cat. The average male Maine Coon typically weighs in at 15 to 25 pounds, but they have been up to 35+ pounds.
They can get to be about 40 inches in length. (No, that’s not a typo, 40 inches.) A beautiful Coon, Stewie, who measured in at 48.5 inches holds the world’s record.

Some other physical traits are:
1. Their bodies and heads are rectangular.
2. A Maine Coon has three layers of fur to protect them from the cold.
3. A Maine Coon has a luxurious mane, making them resemble a small lion.
4. The tail of a Maine Coon is long and bushy.
5. As is true with Harry, a Maine Coon’s eyes have a wisdom of the ages, revealing a natural intelligence.
6. Their ears are larger than other breeds and have tufts of fur growing out of them.

I had a male Maine Coon, so I can tell you from experience, they are certainly one of the sweetest breeds.

1. They are ready to show off their comical antics at a moment’s notice.
2. When they talk to you, which is often, they do it by trilling and singing.
3. They’re loyal as a dog, which is why a lot of people who prefer dogs will get along with Maine Coons perfectly.

Some think they were brought to America from Europe by settlers, others think that the Vikings brought them.
To my way of thinking, it doesn't matter how they got here, I'm just glad they're here!
