Copy of Can Your Cat Eat Turkey?

It’s that time of year again…time for Americans to celebrate Thanksgiving. And how do we celebrate? With food, of course!

Our little furballs would like to join us, and they would eat the turkey you cut off the bone just for them, if you let them.

STOP! Before you give your darling that special treat, read this:

While cats need the nutrition that turkey and other meats give them, they can’t digest “people food” properly. If you look at the container of cat food, often you’ll find it contains turkey, but has no spices. Remember…this food has been processed just for them. More often than not, it’s the spices that can be fatal to them.

Another thing is to make sure you cook the meat thoroughly. As with people, raw meat can make your cat extremely sick.

Now let’s talk skin. I don’t know about you, but the skin might be my favorite part of the turkey. I remember my dad cutting a piece off just for me when he carved the turkey on Thanksgiving.

But I digress.

As you may know, skin is high in fat, and you should avoid giving it to your darling. It can give them a tummy ache at the very least. Skin can also cause pancreatitis.

Bones? Bones are an absolute no-no for your pets! And that goes for all bones Why you may ask? Bones can splinter and cause injuries in the mouth, esophagus, or intestines.

Okay. So what have we learned?

1) DO NOT feed your cat turkey that is raw

2) DO NOT feed your cat turkey that has been cooked with spices

3) DO NOT feed your cat skin from the turkey

4) DO NOT give your cat turkey bones

If you find you can’t stand to have your cat look up at you with those pitiful eyes as you are cooking that delicious turkey, think ahead of time…cook a bit of it plain…no salt, pepper, or spices. Cut it up into small pieces. Remember: this is a special treat, not a whole dinner, so make it a small portion.

Make sure your cat has a safe and happy holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving from Mimi, Izzy, and me!
